The brief

Shared lounges and business areas for a university research cluster, where people rest, meet and work in the same open space. The brief asked for comfort, focus and quiet from one set of furniture.

We made sofas for waiting and lounge areas, some with built-in writing tables and swivel mechanisms, banquettes for corridors and meeting points, swivel armchairs for business areas, acoustic work pods and soft wall panels. Our metal workshop added tables on welded bases and planters in polished stainless steel for the halls. The concept and overall fit-out came from a workplace design partner, and we developed and built every piece.

How we did it

Furniture that turns, and pods that keep the noise out.

The swivel mechanisms were developed for this project. They turn every day without play or creaking, so we used reinforced bearing units and tested each one before installation.

The acoustic pods have a birch frame and a layered fill of acoustic foam and dense felt, covered in a highly sound-absorbing fabric.

All materials were checked against the rules for public buildings, fire safety first.

The building was partly in use, so we installed in stages at night and at weekends. Large modules arrived knocked down and were assembled on site.

The table bases were welded and painted black in our metal workshop, and the planters were made from polished stainless steel, so the greenery in the halls sits in the same quality of metal as the rest of the building.
