Built for 46 °C outside and 24 °C inside.

The Dubai Building Code designs for 46 °C outdoors and a steady 24 °C at around 50 % humidity indoors. Furniture and metalwork in a UAE building live with both: sun, heat and salt on terraces and podiums, cold dry air in lobbies and rooms. This page explains how we specify materials for that climate and how we document fire performance for your submittal.

Outside46 °Cdesign dry bulb, sun, dust and salt air near the coast
Inside24 °Cat about 50 % relative humidity, air conditioning all year
How we specify for the Gulf

The right material for each exposure.

We agree the materials with you at the sample stage and write them into the shop drawings, so the consultant reviews exactly what will be made.

Stainless steel

304 inside, 316L outside.

Grade 304 for air-conditioned interiors. For terraces, pool decks, podiums and anything near the sea we propose 316L, which holds up far better against salt.

Powder coat

A system matched to the exposure.

Interior steel is powder coated in our own booth to any RAL colour. For exterior steel we agree an outdoor-grade coating system at the sample stage, and on coastal sites we recommend stainless steel instead of painted steel.

Frames and boards

Dry timber, stable boards.

For humid interiors we build frames from birch beam and moisture-resistant plywood, as in our five bath houses. For air-conditioned interiors we specify kiln-dried timber and moisture-resistant boards, with E1 or CARB P2 emission class on request.

Foams

Seats that keep their shape.

Dense polyurethane foams that do not sag in daily use, and combustion-modified foams where the fire specification calls for them.

Fabrics

Chosen for the room and the rules.

Contract fabrics with high abrasion resistance and water-repellent treatment, solution-dyed outdoor fabrics for terraces, and fire-rated fabrics to the standard in your specification.

Hardware and glue

Nothing that rusts in a wet zone.

Stainless steel or anti-corrosion coated hardware, and heat-resistant adhesives where furniture stands near water or steam.

Proven in our projects

Heat, steam and weather we already build for.

Our harshest interiors are not offices. Bath houses swing between steam and dry air, terraces and courtyards stand in the weather all year, and hospital furniture has to take standard disinfectants.

Fire safety

Built to the fire standard in your specification.

UAE projects follow the fire strategy of the building and the brand standard of the operator, so the required level differs from job to job. Tell us the standard and the hazard level, and we choose fabrics, foams and panels that come with test reports for it.

Upholstered seating, low hazardBS 7176 with cigarette and match tests, EN 1021-1 and -2
Upholstered seating, medium hazardBS 7176 with BS 5852 crib 5, the usual level for hotels and public areas
Upholstered seating, high hazardBS 7176 with BS 5852 crib 7

Soft wall panels and boardsto the class in the fire strategy: ASTM E84, BS 476 parts 6 and 7, or EN 13501-1
In your submittaltest reports for the exact fabric, foam or board, from their makers or an accredited laboratory

On our hospital and kindergarten projects in Russia the fabrics carried the certificates those buildings require, issued to the fabric makers. For UAE projects we work to the British, European or American standard your consultant specifies.

Indoor air and sustainability

Support for Al Sa'fat, Estidama and LEED.

Green building systems in the UAE look at formaldehyde in composite wood, emissions from finishes and certified timber. We supply the data your sustainability consultant needs for the credits that apply.
